i'm not removing the tc cover....i may only unbolt the intake side enough to get the old gasket out and the new one in....i had the skirt on number 1 sitting in the oil pan...but #1's out and i'm just waiting on parts, going to put all new pistons in and re-ring

No need to remove the carburator unless you are going to rebuild it. That carburator base gasket is not a cheap one. I think it's a dealer only item. Clean up the intake and head mating surface and install the gasket and manifold on the bench. Doing this before putting it back on the block will make reassembly much easier. Once back in the engine bay some of the bolts are a PITA to get to a torque properly.

Looked like hell before I gave it to Mike at M&M cylinder. They do a awesome job. The mating surface was a little pitted so he surfaced real nice. He also pressure tested it in the tank which made it pretty again. A 6 pack (maybe a 12 pack depending on how bad), some simple green, and a brass nozzle on the hose got the manifold up to par too.
