it seemed to start all of a sudden. i was slowing down for a traffic light and when i stepped on the clutch the dash lit up. i was fishing around to try and inspect everything and im 95%sure its the egr system. the truck runs fine above idle. any direction someone could point me in to attempt to fix this? i wanna take the egr off but my truck wont be exempt.

You can test the egr by applying vacuum to the port and see if the engine stalls while holding the rpms up enough to keep from stalling now. If it makes it worse, then the egr vavle is probably ok. Maybe test for vac. leaks by spraying starting fluid around the vac lines and carb, if the idle goes up, you have a leak in that area.
You are referring to the 84, right?

Also, try tapping on teh EGR valve at idle and see if it smooths out. If so, valve is sticking open. Clean or replace. Verify correct vacuum hose connections as well. FSM has hookup and test procedures.

i tried tapping it but to no avail. i think the diafraghm(i killed that 1) might be ripped in the egr valve. how do i test it with a vacuum pump?

If you have a guage on your pump, hook up the pump to the egr valve and apply vacuum, if the guage holds steady, the diagram is ok.

well everything on the egr checked out ok as per the 85 fsm i downloaded a while back. next it appeared to be a fuel problem to me. so off came the stock carb and all the egr to make way for the redline weber 38 i dug out of storage. there was definetly a carb problem. i dont stall out now but have a crappy idle. i took a propane torch (not lit) and leaked gas out around the manifold and few remaining vacuum ports. i might have an air leak because in one particular spot the propane made the trucks idle smooth out some. this carb idled fine on the exact long block im running now. the only remaining piece is the intake manifold. anyone got an offenhauser they wanna part with?
