hey folks, in the process of installing a GM alt into my 94 22re. ive got it pretty much done, however one wiring issue has me a little stumped. in one swap, posted here: http://www.rocketcityrockcrawlers.c...ner%20alternator%20Upgrade%20Project.pdfthe two wires are listed as being #1 as the field wire and #2 as the regulator wire. on my alternator(not the powermaster, its out of an older chevy truck, it was free, took it to autozone and had em test it, it works) it has 1 and 2 stamped into the housing on the back of the alt, however it has a small 'r' and 'f' stamped as well, but they are the opposite as listed for the powermaster. anyone know of any way i can be sure which is which? and if i wire them up backwards, will i do any damage to my electrical system or ECU? im thinkin i should go by the stampings on the alt. that i have. any input appreciated

Check the schematics over at www.autozone.com for the Chevy. I'd make danged sure about that before hookin' up; smoke checks can suck. Hopefully Clay will chime in as well.

well, after extensive digging in my car, i found the original alt plug that came out of the chevy with the alt i have, it seems to match the schematics for an 87...has one large wire, like 10ga, for the regulator connection(it calls the color of the wire 'rust', its kinda like an off-yellow color) and the thin brown wire is the field wire, so i think the markings on the alt i have are correct. ill find out once i get the new timing cover from engnbldr and get this motor back in the truck. thanks much for the schematics!

#1 goes to the Toyota yellow "L" (light) wire, #2 goes to the Toyota white "S" (sense) wire (the smaller white wire, not the big charge wire of course). The Toyota red "IG" (ignition) wire is left unused. I thought I had put that info in my PBB thread, but maybe not... http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=451359

ok, but the problem i have is that the #1 wire, the field wire for everyone else, is the large rust colored wire in mine that has an 'r' stamped on the housing, like for the regulator, the one that loops back around to the charge terminal in http://www.rocketcityrockcrawlers.c...ner%20alternator%20Upgrade%20Project.pdfthe other thin yellow wire is terminal #2 and has 'f' stamped on the housing. its the opposite of how everyone else has it hooked up. by the coloring of the wire, the way the pigtail matches the color that the schematics for the 87 chevy say, im guessing the one i have is wired in reverse from what all the other info says.

Like this, but also with an "f" stamped in? ![[Linked Image]](http://www.madelectrical.com/images/delcor4.jpg) ![[Linked Image]](http://www.madelectrical.com/images/onewir6.jpg) So you are saying that on yours the rust colored wire goes from the #1 terminal to the big battery terminal?

All the ones I've seen seem to match that rocketcity writeup and this Autozone diagram: ![[Linked Image]](http://www.autozone.com/images/cds/gif/large/0900823d801156bd.gif)

yeah, on mine the rust colored wire is much heavier guage and the #1 terminal has an 'R' stamped under it, the #2 has an 'F' stamped on it. also, mine isnt at the 12 o'clock position either. when i took it into autozone to have it tested, they wired it up with their universal connector to the test machine and it tested fine, which makes me think that i wire it like the rocketcity diagram says, however, the large wire and the stampings, plus the diagram i got from autozone that looked different makes me think otherwise. is there any way i can test to be sure which is which?
