can someone please explain to me how the stock sterio wiring in an '87 4runner works? a wiring diagram would be helpful too.

sterio is all stock (except a panasonic cd player), with rear speakers. rear speakers are not working, which is pretty much what im trying to figure out at the moment.

But, the wiring has me a little confused. Ive done plenty of sterio and electrical work, but i dont understand what a bunch of these "extra" wires are doing.

first of all, theres 2 connectors at the rear speakers. 3 wires in one, 2 in the other.

second, under the dash, theres the 2 normal connectors: one with power/ ground and front speakers, and one with rear speaker wires.

There is ALSO another connector, same as the "main" connector (with power and ground) that goes into some sort of a jumper harness.

what really confuses me, is BOTH the connectors work, as in, the sterio works (with just front speakers) with either of the large connectors plugged in. AND it dosent matter if the other large connector is plugged into the jumper harness or not.

If anyone can make sense of what im saying, please help, im mega confused.

the way i usually figure out such rat's nests of wiring is to identify the color of my rear speaker wires, and find the matching ones up front. theyre almost always one solid color. if not, then check a little downstream from either end to see if the prev owner spliced in a connector somewhere. once youve done that, make sure theyre connected to the correct wires on the stereo. also, make sure the fader function on the stereo isnt set to front speakers only

My 4Runner factory rear speakers had built-in amplifiers which required the additional power wires to each speaker. I seem to recall extra wires at the radio which were for the different factory options (cassette player, equilizer, etc.). Sorry, I don't have a diagram handy.

ah, built-in amplifiers, that seems to be more that im looking at here. PITA.

unfortunatly none of the wires to the rear speakers match colors to anything in the front harness..... great.

all speakers, wiring, and connectors are 100% stock. when i got the truck it still had the original tape deck in it. and honestly, it didnt look like it had ever been out. quite possible, im only the 2nd owner. but anyways, yeah, its ALL stock.

i guess i really need a wiring diagram. any other input would be appreciated too.

Hi Guys,

I'm a little new to the forum thing, but I'm definitely a big Toy enthusiast and will try to help how I can.

The factory speaker system in the 87-95 Runner's does incorporate an amp on each speaker housing. The amp can be used with an aftermarket stereo. You must be sure to hook up the amp turn on lead from your stereo (usually Blue/white) to the factory amp turn on lead. This is usually a solid white wire on the large plug at the radio location. If you are using an aftermarket wiring adapter harness, the power antenna wire will pin up with this wire. Otherwise, just tap onto it, and you should have sound. Be sure the rear speaker wires from the radio are connected to the correct rear speaker wires at the radio location (small plug).

Sorry for the long post, I hope this helps.

These wires are on the small plug at the radio location.

Should have included on my first post.

darren, first, welcome to the board.

second, your the man.

amp turn on wire. duh.

wired it up, a-ok, got rear speakers.

every diagram ive looked at was labled as "power antenna". install dr and such dont mention an amp, and that threw me off. but yeah, power antenna is the same signal as an amp turn-on wire. thanks a bunch!

This works most of the time unless your stereo turns off the antenna when listening to CD's which results in no amp. Ask me how I know

Getting the Wheeling Fever
Hello everyone here at the board. I just got finished yesterday evening with the install of an aftermarket cd player in my 87 toyota pickup and man was it a mess due to someone cutting all the connectors off the factory wiring harness.

I used the link supplied above to help me figure out most of my wires but I had to resort to my long leaded volt/ohm meter to figure out the speaker wiring.

It works great and I want to thank everyone here at this board who have always pointed myself in the right direction on any problem that I have posted here.

Thanks again
