One came w/ 22re, other 3vze. Otehr than the bellhousing, are there major differences? If needed... would a complete A340H be a drop-in replacement for the A340F if you also changed T-cases with it? '89 FSM says nothing about different gear ratios etc.

They are not the same. The A340H shares fluid between the transfer case and transmission and the parking mechanism is in the transfer case, so it cannot be removed from the transmission. The above is not true of the A340F. They also have different shift characteristics. I think that the gear ratios are the same (2.7ish?) and they are both chain driven cases.

biggest diff, for me, is that the 340f is that you can slap in a gear driven t-case and therefore, a marlin adapter and an extra box... <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" /> http://www.4x4wire.com/toyota/tech/autocrawler/

Inchworm now makes dual case adapters for the A340H. I documented one of the first installs, should be in Dirt Trucks magazine in a few months (darn print lead times...).

But if you were to change both units at once, as a whole - would it not eliminate this problem? AKA change both tranny and T-case so they match?

yes and no...the F uses 3 solenids inside the the tranny as the H has 4 2 shift 1 o/d and 1 transfer position. you will need the ecu from them as they are computer controlled. F is way better all the way.

They also have different shift characteristics. I think that the gear ratios are the same (2.7ish?) and they are both chain driven cases. I don't know about the A340H, but the gear ratios for the A340F are: First 2.804 Second 1.531 Third 1.000 Fourth 0.705 Reverse 2.393 That was from an old archived post at http://www.4x4wire.com/forums/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=UBB89&Number=256769 regarding 3rd gen 4Runners.
