Hey Guys ______ What ôSHOULDö a 22re engine,5sp., idle at and, what would be the (HIGHEST EXEPTABLE) rpm, at idle? ? ? ? Also, just curios, what you guys idle atö and on what enginesö and the ramifications of a 1000 rpm idle, if NOT corrected? ? ? ? It seems when my rpmÆs are lower than 1000, when I come to a stop, the rpmÆs start dipping and 50% of the time stall the engine._____ THANKS IN ADVANCE BAYRUNNER

A 22re should idle at 750, under normal conditions. Normal being: warmed up, no a/c, no turning the wheel, ect.

I would check the Throttle Position Sensor IDLe setting:

If that is off, you'll have an erratic idle.

As for ramifications - obviously you'll burn through fuel faster... takes 33% more gas to do 1000 rpm than 750

You may also have a real small vacuum leak, just enough to be a problem at low idle?

I have a 22re and shortly after I got it I took it to the dealer to look for a problem I couldn't find. The service mechanic set the idle at 850 RPM and set the timing by ear. He said for this engine 850 was best. It also has 200k miles on it so it's a bit loose. I ran it like that for about 6 months and then swapped in a EB 268 cam and left the idle at 850 and seem to notice a slight lope compared to before the cam. This could be timing again or just the sightly longer duration of the cam.
As far as problems at 1000Rpm, as said, gas mileage will suffer and over time the engine life will shorten but not much. It may live 6months- 1year less than if it was idling at 750. I am just using this hypothetically so no one jump on me about some calculation <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Hmm... not sure on a shorter life span due to higher idle. One would think parts would wear faster, but if you have better oil pressure I would think it may *at times* be even better to have a higher rpm. Now gas mileage is likely all together different.

With my EB crawler cam I find I am right around 850 - 950. Yes, I have checked the TPS and timing several times - this seems to be where she likes to be though.

My EB 268C cam idles nicest just a tick below 1000. Sweet spot for her is between idle loping, and RPM surge.

*Course we CC'd and zero decked that one, and matched the weights to one gram.

Most even with a cylinder imbalance should settle in to a nice purr at 850-900. 750 is fine for the stock cam but I think any aftermarket design will want a bit more velocity...*EB

Anyone ever sat back in their high backed leather chair in the office and just said the word "Lope"? Lope....one of my superintendants (and good personal friend) is nicknamed Lope. Anything below 1000 RPMs on the 88 with the Street RV and 270 will cause her to LOPE. Serious now... really.

Been that way since day one....up until installing the topend on the Gen2 22R-EB lower end. But what this engine does at idle, acceleration and sitting off would be hard for any of you to duplicate. Current tune has it idling at about 1050 RPMs and you would never know it was running 'cept for barely audible puff from the tail pipe. Of course tapping the noise maker wakes the dead in the surrounding counties...but that is besides the point.

Time to play build engines again....what should we do????
