Don, have you tried driving without the rear driveshaft? If there's no noise then it's probably the U joints you're talking about.

Be careful though, I drove a couple miles around town once and it felt different driving in front wheel drive. I'm not sure how it will handle at higher speeds.

I've thought of it, but would be very hesitant with my front locker. It's a Detroit, not ARB, so it's fully engaged all the time. It's tough to steer on the trail sometimes, I'm not sure I want to feel a locker at 60MPH!

As it is, the rear u-joint is most certainly ready for replacement; if it appears the front one isn't good, it would be replaced regardless of whether it's the ultimate cause of the noise. Hmmmm, we shall see.....
