Oil Pressure Tap: What do you think? #733005 06/23/06 12:26 PM

Someone installed a 22R (one oil pressure tap, below oil filter) into this '80 4x4 (harness has sender AND pressure switch wires). Block is tapped for switch threads right behind the filter. Would you drill (with vacume applied) a small hole into the block to make it functional, or go with an exterior plumbing tap in the existing sender hole? Feedback appreciated! Thanks.

Personally I would not do it. One shaving can clog a journal and starve a bearing. Someone else on here did it a while back. Maybe he will chime in and let us know if he has spun a bearing yet <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/ignore.gif" alt="" />

Roll Me Over
The only way I would be drilling into the oil galley would be if the engine was stripped down for a rebuild and I could clean it out.

There should be two ports. One below the oil filter and the other in the center of the motor mount bolt pattern. You can follow the passage on the block from the front by the timing cover/oil pump back to below the oil filter and then up towards the oil filter.

Body Damage is Cool
i think who 4xtoy was referring to was me. i didnt drill a new hole but made the existing one bigger in order to accommodate a larger fitting b/c mine was stripped out. heres the link

overall it turned out great. i just got back from a 900 mile round trip to new york and my engine ran great. even at 80 mph. i have about 2000 miles on my engine since i tapped the whole.

If it's upstream from the filter, one should be ok to drill, right?

if you are drilling a completely new hole, i would say no b/c it wont have the little galley pocket thing that the other ports have to trap the shavings. that made it easy to get all the debris out w/ a magnet and a very small attachment on my vacuum.

but then again its all about the precautions you take and whether or not youre dropping the oil pan. if you drill in the side of the block in a random spot, the shavings will fall right into the oil sump. this wasnt the case in my situation.

The is one on the block forward of the other one hidden inside the motor mount bracket! You can fit a oil switch here but the psi sending unit might be too bulky.
