I checked my Axiom with 3.5DI, and seems like it has a different over-the-spare-tire rear setup. I see a small tank located over my spare tire. This small tank is connected to the gas tank. This is a sort of gas tank pressure system. I do not remember having this small tank on my 3.2 Rodeo. This small tank may be in place where the towing hitch is to be installed.

Another guess is the hitch is not rated for the more powerful engine <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
