So I picked up a new to me, non running, 87 Turbo truck that needs some work.
First thing on the list was to fix the PO's botched head gasket job. Hydro-locked bolts were the culprit.
Oupon removing the head I saw that the #2 spark plug hole has a heli coil in it. Now, i've used these with some sucess before but i'm wondering if I should have it welded shut and tapped out, or leave it alone. I have another good turbo head on a spare motor if I need it, so thats an option too.
Any thoughts on this or experiences revealed would be great.
Thanks

Getting the Wheeling Fever
Once you use a timesert, you'll realize just how crappy helicoils are. I used to run a foreign-car-only machine shop, and that's all we ever used. After getting used to them, and then having nothing but a helicoil (after I quit), I swear I'll never use anything else. However, if your hole is already tapped for helicoil, you may be commited to helicoil, or welding, like you said.

Getting the Wheeling Fever
After reading my post, I thought it may be unclear as to which insert i've used--- Timesert. I just checked out Timesert.com, and i remembered something else- When you're done installing a timesert, if it's done properly, you have the feeling of a quality repair; it looks and feels good. I DID NOT have that same sense of security when I installed a helicoil!

I remember seeing something like this in an issue of FOUR WHEELER about 2 or three months ago. If youre a reader thumb through the tech questions from those issues.

go to chromate industries web site, they have these inserts called permaserts. i just used one on a head bolt, it worked awsome! very easy to work with too! they also sold me a drill bit and tap to do the job, they were both very high quality pieces. the bit went through cast iron like it was wood!

Thanks for the input all!
That Timesert looks great, though I think i'm stuck with the Heli coil. The head is going out to my machinist tomorow for a check and deck. If it passes i'll just put it back on and hope for the best.
Thanks again;
