Getting the Wheeling Fever

never seen anything like it before. both valves stuck completely in the head/block. so i'm to the point where i might part the truck out here soon along with my other 2wd in the back yard. I have tons of parts from different years all over in the garage so watch the for sale section here in the next week or so. gunna sell stuff cheap to get rid of it.

i've heard of people having similar things happen because they are on the free was and instead of shifting into 4th they go to second and their engine see's 10k rpm. Or my buddy had a porsch 944 and they timing belt tensioner broke so the cam went cray and punched the valves through a few pistons.

Daaaang...I'd put that up there with the picture I got from a guy who had the crankshaft whack his oil pump and the TC cover.

No noise or trouble before it failed?

not really any indication just one lil odd sputter taking off at a stop sign an hour before. but i was runnin a holley 500 on it so i didnt think anything of it but thought i gave it too much gas at first. that engine ran great with that carb after 1200 rpms giving the best throttle responce i could ever expect. but otherwise nothin. no unusual noises, feelings, reactions.

Body Damage is Cool
looks like a couple dropped valves if you ask me. the retainers either failed or somehow got loose and the valves went bye-bye down the holes.

pity it had to happen on such a clean engine!

Something similar happened to me. Decided to keep the old exhaust valves on a rebuild. As penny-wise and dollar foolish proved about 100 miles after, heard a little ping, then a bunch of engine ratteling after comming out of a street corner. Destroyed head, piston(s), metal contamination, etc. All for trying to save a few bucks!

lol The valve slpit the piston right down the middle if you can see in the picture, scored up the block too much. as far as what happened i dont know. #1 it wasnt the valve keepers or spings. didnt know it was that bad before pullin the head untill i tried takin out the spark plug and half was gone and i could see the valve in the hole. took off the valve cover and all looked normal, valve shaft, and spings still in the right place.
[Linked Image]how it looks. competely normal so it wasn't spings/keepers they're still in the right spot
#2 timing chain looks good, although i havent tore it down to see the crank gear yet. who knows i'm gunna take apart the block to see the rods and crank gear, maybe that will be the clue
