Speedy sleeves suck. Here's the fix for a grooved crankshaft pulley. Simply get the oil seal for the opposite generation of truck. For example, if you have a 79-83 truck get the 84+ front main seal. The seals have the same OD and ID, but they are different thicknesses. Works like a charm. It's the same principle as not driving in the seal all the way, but by using the different seal you can go ahead and seat it all the way assuring that it is square. Simply go to your local parts counter and have them pull out a seal for a 1981 22R and then the seal for a 1988 22R. You'll see that they are identical OD and ID, but the early one is thicker. By running a different year seal you will effectively move the sealing lips to a new position on the crankshaft pulley snout.

Yeah, I second that too. If you've got the pulley off, just pull the pump too. It makes putting the seal in sooooo much easier too, plus, your assured of getting the seal in square and not dinging up the crankshaft if you install the seal while the pump is off the truck. I also put a LIBERAL coat of grease into the lips of the seal before I put it back in the truck. I think it helps with break in as well as making sure you don't fawk up the seal when you put the pulley back on... The only replaced front main that I've ever had leak again was when I used a speedy sleeve. By switching up the seal years you can get another 200K out of your front main. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
