i have been wracking my brain trying to figure out a type of shield after my alt. kicked it last month.
no such luck, suggestions have been to use a type of air filter to cover it, or a rubber bag something like a shower cap, or an actual box built around it to stop the splashes of mud. it seems clean water isn't that bad for it; it's mud. once it gets in the bushes the alt. cans.

There are two types of snorkels that can fit. The type I got the Safari Snorkel that I got through Matt for about 300 bucks. Part number HS100HF It's not too bad of an install. The template won't work because it's not made for our trucks. The only modification necessary to make it fit is you have to cut the inner fender section and take some material out of it because it's too long and hits the back fo the turn signal. Ok, the other one that will work you can get from TJM. But I think it's really high like $600+ http://www.tjmproducts.com.au/brochures/rodeo.pdfYou need to paste this into the browser. Scroll down to the red pickup, there are two different models. They are not cheap. Joe

Yeah we were quoted like $650 for the tjm shipped by air. It would have been like $200 cheaper for them to ship it on a boat, but they said that could take 6 months . My brother still might get it though.
The reason I got my snorkel was that I went through deep water a few times an injested some water, and scared the crap out of me. I've had my engine submerged quite a bit, my altnator has been fine so far. But I've only gone through clean water, not muddy dirty water.
The only problems I have when water fording are my distributer(sp?) Its not 100% sealed, and my motor kind of studders when it gets wet. The other thing is my exhaust, I've put a custom bigger than factory exhaust, and my little motor doesn't have enough back pressure to keep water out. So I've got to figure those few things out before I go in deep water again. But I'm impressed with my trooper so far with the snorkel, I've had my trooper floating with the engine still running. I did have my smog pump seize up on me though.

The TJM snorkel said it was a Pathfinder. Do they make one for the Rodeo, or do you have to adapt?

could you put a container around the alternator and pressurize it with an air source? it would keep air flowing (though limited) and water out. it wouldn't be permanent, just slipped on prior to major water crossings.
i was just wondering if that was possible or feasible. i do well to change my own oil so i possess no mechanical skills or ablity but was just curious about the idea.

I kinda like the tjm snorkel. Maybe I'll order one now and get it by Christmas (by boat).
I have noticed one new sound since I did the deep water. It's kinda of a singing sound (not too loud) and it does it more at higher rpm. Hopefully I haven't messed up the alternator bearings.

Hope harder. That is pretty much the siren song of dying alt bearing/bushings.
