Hi. Well, in the process of changing this wheel bearing in my 86 runner, I got down to where there was supposed to be TWO 54mm nuts. Only in my truck, there was only ONE, and lets just say I didn't need the wrench to unscrew it..

My understanding is that I am therefore missing:

(1) large washer, and
(1) 54mm nut

Is this the case? Or is there some other explanation? I can't imagine why that bearing went bad..

Yup that sounds like the parts missing...Let me know if you need them, I have some extras I can mail out to you. Did you check the other side yet???

Well, The owner of the toyota shop here in town thought that maybe this auto hub didn't require these parts. I still don't know if that's the case or not. I've re-assembled the hub with the new wheel bearing, and the symptoms are fixed. But it's not going to last long if I'm still missing washers/nuts..

The nut that does exist in my hub is kept from loosening by the housing with the 3 screws, which is keyed into the spindle. There's really nowhere for the nut to go, but I'm still not clear on whether I'm missing these parts, or whether I'm just reading the wrong auto-hub disassembly faq.

I started to dis-assemble the passenger side, but only got as far as my siezed cover screws, so they're soaking for a while till i can loosen them.

Sure would be nice to know. Again, this is an 86 4runner.

Every Toyota I've EVER taken apart has a thrust washer, 1 nut to hold pressure, a star washer then a jam nut. If you don't have a dealer near you...Marlin sells the whole shebang for $8.50 http://www.marlincrawler.com/htm/axles.htm

Mine used to only have the one nut per side when I had the craptacular auto-hubs...

The Warn HD hub installation kit came with 2 nuts and the thrush washer. Maybe you are only supposed to have the one nut?

The Auto hubs only have a single nut with three torx bolts to stop the nut from backing off.

You installed Warn hubs on purpose? I guess they're an upgrade from the auto hubs, but I'd still go find some manual Toyota hubs soon if I were you.

Those cone washers Warn deletes are most definitely there for a reason. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

I think of it as a fuse, protecting more important, harder to repair on the trail parts... But they haven't failed in the 5 years since I installed them. My mounting nuts don't come loose, thanks to a dab of RTV.

Thanks everybody for your help on this. I've come to the conclusion that this particular hub does *not* require the additional washer and nut. I've taken apart the other hub as well, and it is identical to this one.

SUMMARY (based on responses so far) : Some hubs use dual nuts and a washer, where the nuts and washer w/tabs hold the system together after proper torquing. Other hubs (like mine) use a single, specialized nut, with a flange built-in that seats right against the outer bearing. This is kept from loosening because it is attached with three screws to a housing that is keyed into the spindle.

Take that for what it's worth. If i were an expert, i wouldn't have had to ask in the first place! But know you know everything i do WRT this particular issue.

Look at it this way, if or when they do come loose expect to get new hub bodies, because it will not only shear the studs but the locating pins also. Those things are next to impossible to get out once they are sheared off. Some people have good luck with aftermarket hubs, most do not. You may have found the answer with the RTV.
