Body Damage is Cool
On my way to pick up a vehicle for my daughter/son to drive (well, mostly for Amanda. Dan is going to have to live with the Suzuki Samurai for a while still).

I'm buying a 1992 Cherokee Laredo. Nothing special. 4.0L, Automatic with the CommandTrac 4wd system...Interior good, paint bad. Drivetrain in very good shape for 130k miles.

It's not an Isuzu, but I am getting a great buy on something for the kids, so I won't pass it up.

Guess Amanda is going to hae to start hanging out with Julie and Paddler at our Isuzu events

I seem to remember several guys that were showing an interest in hanging out with Amanda . . .

Those 4.0s seem to be reasonably trouble free. I hope is serves the Mason Family well!!

1990 Amigo XS 4x4, BFG MT 35s, Front & Rear ARBs, 5.38s, Tera Lows, custom springs, custom nerf bars, DOR Front Bumper, custom rear bumper, HD 9500 winch, some CalMini & other stuff

After my short jaunt through the mountains, I'd have to say a 4.0 is better suited to your area than the Amigo 2.6... I can't even imagine DD a Sammy out there Best of luck with your new purchase!

actually, for around town the sammi is just fine. 60-65 top speed, so I try to stay off the hiway. Seems like if I drive the sammi to work, Dan will end up with the Amigo anyway.

If Amanda can keep her foot out of the go pedal, she will be just fine. If not, she won't have a license anyway...

Jeff,
This is exactly what I did for both my daughters. The oldest has a 94? I think that I put a small lift and 31Æs on with a lockright in the rear. She drives it on all the Moab trails Linda and I lead.
The youngest has an older XJ that is stock for now. She just got here license and is not into off-roading the way here siblings and parents are but it still makes for a cheep DD that will be good in the winter.

Getting the Wheeling Fever
My very first vehicle was a 1990 jeep cherokee with the 4.0 liter engine. Got it when I was 17 with 6 miles on the speedometer. My x girlfriend has it now and it has about 250,000 miles on it (although I did rebuild the engine, transmission, transfer case and drive shafts at about 160,000 miles). Although I have 2 troopers now, the cherokee still has a special spot in my heart. She never left me stranded and the only time she ever stalled was in a flash flood, but she fired right back up after turning the starter for about 30 seconds. I had water flowing rapidly about halfway up the grill and my girlfriend in the passenger seat repeating over and over, "oh my god we're gonna die... oh my god we're gonna die..." We made it, but the cold water hitting the hot exhaust manifold caused it to crack in 2 places.
Comparing the Trooper to the cherokee, the cherokee has one thing that both my troopers lack... an engine (I have a 2.3 4 cyl and a 2.8 v6)The 4.0 liter engine coupled with the lightweight of the cherokee chassis made it quite quick and good for off roading. The trooper has it beat in just about every other category, though. For one, it is just built beefier. The off road ride in the trooper is much better, as the cherokee had a tendency to bump steer. The trnasmissions on the troopers and pretty much the rest of the drive train is stouter than the cherokee. Both have crappy seats, but I like the interior on the troopers better. Whatever... thought I'd put in my $.02. Four of the five vehicles that I have ever owned for more than year was either a cherokee or a trooper. In fact, I still have an almost rebuilt '84 cherokee lurking deep under a mountain of furniture in my father's wharehouse.
