Hi there:

I own a 2004 Tacoma double cab and want to have the ability to tow up to 6000 lbs. (as stated in the owner's manual) I didn't have the optional towing package installed at the time of purchase but I would like to install one now. I called my local Toyota dealer who didn't seem to know how to help me. What are the parts I need to install on my Tacoma togive it the ability to tow this weight?

Thanks in advance...

I just bought a 2001 Taco V6 auto myself(I love it!) and it came with the factory hitch. I think calling it a tow package is a bit mis-leading.....it's just a tow hitch as far as I know. I don't seem to have the external tranny cooler or an extra core in the radiator....or lower ring/pinions. Mine is a class 3 and that is 5000 pounds rated. I guess you will need a class 4....and you probably don't have a tranny cooler with your auto(I assume) so you might as well get that, too.....oh, and don't forget to add a tranny temp gauge. ZUK

If you don't already have a hitch, UHAUL usually has good deals on class 3 and 4 hitches that they install. Just an idea.

U-haul is a good idea.

I also just ordered a Hayden tranny cooler. I ordered the largest one that I estimated would fit in front of the radiator.
See the 3rd cooler down on this link (OC-1678).....

Just knowing the cooling system is cooler is not enough for me....I wanted to monitor exactly how cool it is so I ordered one of these. I kinda splurged a bit.

Zuk, have you decided where to mount that gauge? have you seen the pod mounts that replace the driver's hand grab?there is also a different fan clutch for towing. I can't remember for sure but I think the stocker has an orange mark and the heavy duty has a green mark.

U-haul parts suck. Their wiring harness are splice in and run off of the power in your current wiring which is bad. For 40 bucks you can buy a harness that plugs in to ur taillights and has a relay built in. toyota also makes one but its 140 bucks or somethen rediculous. As for the hitch, drawtite is a brand. shop around online. I dont recomend uhaul. their hitch was a pos an 60 bucks more then the one i got.

Where did you see this pod mount at? I have been looking all over for a place to mount some gauges as well as my cb?

I installed an Autometer tranny guage too, mine starts at 140 degrees...thought it wasnt working when i got it since i never see it go above that in the transmission pan, it does offroad though never higher than 180...would have liked it to be mounted inline with the tranny hoses to the OE cooler.
