I just scored a hi lift for free from the old man's garage. He hasn't used it in about 10 years. After I got it all cleaned up and working good, I am lookin to mount it. Since I didn't pay anything for the jack, I am gonna mount it for cheep. I plan to get some 3" bolts, nuts washers, etc. The plan is to run the bolts through the stock rear bumper with a lock washer and nut, tighten it down and then slide the jack over the exposed bolt ends with another washer and nut on the outside.

My question is should I get a backing plate to put behind the stock bumper before I put the thing together?

If you are going into the wilderness with the Jeep make sure the jack is not part of the departure angle!

It will get covered with dust if you keep it oiled. In CT, i have mine mounted up on the back of the rear roll bar. Keeps it clean in winter also when the roads are loaded with salt.

I bought 2 chain link fence hold offs from Home Depot with a few bolts. Two of the bolts are long enough to accept the High Lift at each end and mount the base. Oh yeah, get some of the large flat washers. All available at the link fence area for about $5.00 or $7.00 bucks and all galvanized. I can put the top on and still remove the jack by rolling up the rear window.

Body Damage is Cool
Rit, I think that bottle-opener on the Wrangler's rear bumper is great! Should be listed as essential trail gear for all Jeeps.

Jim, the jack will be above the bottom of the rear bumper so I don't think I will have any issues there.

Rit, I can't convince the wife to let me put it inside. She has this fear of it coming loose and knocking her head off.

Thanks for the replys. I will be mounting it this afternoon.

It should be wider than the 2 uprights so impossible to hit anyone forward............maybe launch onto the hood behind you if you get rear ended. That baby is on there and very easy to get off. When it's tightened, it's pulled up tight to the uprights on each end. I had mine locked to one of the uprights with a cable bicycle lock. Very simple and effective.

Fred, .............like my bumper opener I like beer that comes with a non-screwable top (I told a friend of mine).

Getting the Wheeling Fever
I went to the local auto parts store and bought a set of old fashion hood pins, there were already holes in my front bumper in the right place. I place the jack ($29.95 Farm Jack from Harbor Freight) on the pins and slide in the clips, a littlt rattely but works. [Linked Image]

Well, I got it all mounted. When I tightened the nuts down, the jack had a defenite bow in it. To take care of this, I had a couple of 3/4" pvc end caps around so I drilled a hole in the tops and threaded them on the bolts. This gave me a gap on both sides so no bow. Took it out for a drive and found no noises.

I took the jack apart and I don't understand why everyone sais these things don't work well in the dirt. I must have pulled 10 lbs of dirt and rust out of this thing.

Gonna re-paint it and will post pics once it is done.
