Getting the Wheeling Fever

Hey guys, Got another head scratcher here. Just replaced the fuel pump in my yj and at the same time noticed my fuel pump relay wasn't working right. It's clicking on for a second, then off. When I jump the relay connections, the pump runs fine. Put the relay back in and nothing. I tried the new and the old relays, and they're both doing the same thing. This leads me to beleive that there was nothing wrong with the old relay. Any ideas on what might be causing this? Thanks.

These problems come up here pretty often. As I remember the most common problem is a result of the pump ground not being good. Some of these jeeps have a ground on the emergency brake bracket inside the Jeep I have heard regrounding that particular wire has solved some fuel pump problems. Have you checked the wires you are crossing to see if they are grounds or hot wires? Big JIm <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/pfft.gif" alt="" />

Yeah Jim, I was kinda wondering if the pump ground could've been the cause. I looked at it when I was replacing the pump and it looked kinda sketchy. I ran an ohms test on it and it came out good though, so I put it back in. I've got it running now, and don't want to pull the tank back out if I don't have to.

The computer turns the relay on and off. If the engine isn't running, the relay turns on primes the system and turns off. Unless the engine is running, the relay won't stay on.

Hey Casper I just remembered I had one once that had a bad SOCKET for the relay. It gave me fits for a long time till I finally replaced the socket with an aftermarket one. After the replacement I had no problems. There was corrosion in the thing and it worked sporatically. The one I replaced it with had a pigtail and I cut the wires from the old one and ohmed them to the proper place when replacing the new one.
