Newspaper Ad - 2000 Trooper LS 4x4 - 2,700 firm - needs motor.
Truck has 103k miles and sounds as if the motor will actually have to come out. I've got 1995 and 1996 Troops already but nothing as nice as an LS. I have a good local machine shop - is it reasonable to figure I could put 1,500.00 of machine work and parts into this (plus my free labor removing and reinstalling) and have it back going? Seems like it could work out as a good deal.
Someone please talk me out of it before I end up with three Troopers.

You could always apply to THA (Trooperholics Anonymous)!
Talk to Jerry Lemond about factory replacement motors, he can probably swing a good deal on one.
Or, maybe you just need a crank kit (assume it ran out of oil?) and upgrade the pistons if they're old-style with small drain holes.
Also talk to Jerry about his Super-Trick Piston Mod for the Oil Burners.

I haven't decided to go look at it yet, figuring that if I go to look I will buy it.
The guys story was as follows:
"The PV valve didnt work - the PV valve is what the oil goes through to the motor and it didnt let the oil through."
So I don't have much idea what really happened or how bad it is. Apparently it starts and runs but smokes. I'd need to get it to my house which is probably 50 miles and I dont know if it would make it. The guy has had it to a dealer (wanted 5,000 to fix) and it is now at an independent shop but he is wanting to sell it if he can.
I'd looked at used motors a few months ago and I didnt like the looks of that scenario. I would have ended up with at least 1k in that and would not have had any idea what I really had where if my guy can rebuild it at least it would be known.
Jerry,
In the event you are reading this thread, about how much is a crate motor and shipping to Oklahoma?

Sounds to me like they weren't scrupulous on oil changing regimen and the motor is all 'coked up'. Maybe a Severe Duty treatment with Seafoam followed by Auto RX or similar would clean it up enough to be serviceable.
Assuming of course it's still got oil pressure and isn't knocking. It's quite obvious they don't know much about the inner workings of an engine!

Looked at this truck today. I ruled it out as it is a 2 wheel drive and if I'm going to have soemthing that isnt fast and gets bad mileage it at least has to have four wheel drive.
The mechanic it is at never started it - he took the word of the customer who took the word of the dealer who told him the motor was shot.
Wierd deal - the oil was way above full - like a good 4 inches up the dipstick from full. The battery was dead so I could not start it without them knowing it and I don't want to be the one who turns the key when the rods come out the side of the block - at least not when someone is looking
Anyhow, if someone wants a 2 wheel drive piece this one could be had cheap and I'm willing to send pics. The seller seems nice and legitimate.

I thought about that but I don't have a place to put it and don't think my HOA would look to kindly on me parting it out over a few months in my driveway
