Getting the Wheeling Fever
Recently my 86 22r 4x4 with 225k has developed a few problems. I dont kow if the issues are related or not. The truck is very hard to start after it has sat for 1 day. I have to pump the pedal 15 times and crank and crank. It used to be a 2 pump and it would light instantly. Also the high idle will stay on after you have come to a stop. If you tap the pedal the idle will return to normal. And finally the truck bogs horrible just off idle. If you tap the gas it caughs then revs, which makes it horrible starting from a stop. If you arent carefull the truck will stall. After that (upper RPM's) the truck runs great. I really dont know where to start because there are so many symtoms. If anyone has any ideas please let me know. Thanks Stinson

Both those symptoms can be caused by a faulty accelerator pump in the carb. With the air cleaner off & choke open, open the throttle a few times while looking down the carb. You should see a healthy stream of gas squirting into the throat. If not the pump is bad (assuming that your fuel level is correct in the sight window).

Thanks I will def check that. How much is an accelerator pump, and would I be able to get one at a parts store or is that a dealer only part? Thanks Stinson

You will most likely have to purchase a carb. rebuild kit to get the acc. pump. Around $25-$35 for the kit.

I had a problem that was almost exactly like this. Eventually I couldn't get the truck to start at all and I burned a starter. After inspecting everything I could I started pulling ignition wires. When I pulled the lead wire that goes from the distributor to the ingnitor, the metal pieces crumbled into dust. Somehow it got fried. I replaced that one wire and all was good. Something simple you might check.

Well after a little more inpspection of the carb, I am getting a healthy stream of fuel from the acc pump. When the truck is running the fuel level is right in the middle of the sight glass. When I bump the throttle I do get a loud woshing sound from a little gismo mounted in the aircleaner housing. Not sure if that was there before or not. I am going to check the plug wires next, but it sure seems like a carb problem to me. ANy more ideas guys, Thanks Stinson

My 84 FSM says under "Engine hesitates/poor acceleration:
Carburator problems:
Float level too low
Accelerator pump faulty
Power valve faulty
Choke valve closed (hot engine)
Choke system
Fuel line clogged

The whooshing sound is most likely the air injection system doing it's thing.

If you've checked everything on that list, I'm out of ideas. My next step would probably be to rebuild the carb unless you've had it apart recently...

You said the fuel was in the middle of the site glass while running, but you ALSO need to check it first thing in the AM to see if there's any fuel in view in the site glass at all BEFORE you fire 'er up.

If it's empty, the float/needle valve is shot. Your dipstick more than likely also smells like fuel. THIS is not good; will wash down your engine.
