Getting the Wheeling Fever

My '88 22RE idles perfectly until I am running the a/c. Is there something that is supposed to compensate for the load? I know there is a fast idle adjustment, but I'm not sure if that is just for cold starts or if it will help with the load of the a/c. If I just slightly step on the gas pedal it smooths out.TIA, Roy
