Getting the Wheeling Fever

My '88 22RE idles perfectly until I am running the a/c. Is there something that is supposed to compensate for the load? I know there is a fast idle adjustment, but I'm not sure if that is just for cold starts or if it will help with the load of the a/c. If I just slightly step on the gas pedal it smooths out.TIA, Roy

Yes, there's a step up idle circuit with the a/c. Usually it's that white knob just to the right of the throttle plate when you're facing the engine.

just curious, but how would one set it back to factory or default to try and get the idle better. kinda like someone messed with it, not knowing what it is, and now I think it could be the root of my evils. not that that someone was me or anything <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/ignore.gif" alt="" />

You set it so that the idle speed with the A/C on (if present) or with power steering working (if present) is somewhat higher (under load) than without the accesory on. Usually something around 1000 RPM works fine. If you set the speed too high (like 1200 or higher) you *will* get into the ECU's idle cutout RPM and the engine will cut out when you hit the brakes.

Ok, I messed around with that adjustment screw and the idle is much smoother. It took the hiccup out of it but I can't say I really noticed the idle speed increasing. Don't argue with success! Thanks again.

You might want to pull the vacuum lines and make sure they or the fittings are not plugged with crud. Mine fittings were totally clogged to the point I had to use a small drill bit to auger them out. And if that is working properly, you'll definately notice an idle speed change. And you will hear the pypass air hissing almost like a leaking tire, it can be petty loud.

Two parts to testing this: 1) Testing the VSV. With the AC off, try and blow through one of the tubes attached to the VSV. Should not flow air. Turn the AC on, see if it flows air.
2) Bypass the VSV and route a single hose from the diaphram to a vac source - basically use the two connections on the diaphram with a single hose. Idle speed should change depending on the position of that plastic screw (out is faster).
In my case, VSV doesn't flow enough air to actuate the diaphram... I suspect the diaphram is old and crapped out, as I've cleaned both.
