Getting the Wheeling Fever

Well there I was....removing my heads to get them rebuilt and I didn't have a firm grip on my impact wrench.....long story short, I broke the EGR tube that sits forward of the egr valve. The dealer says they no longer make them. Any ideas? I've tried to weld it but the metal is so thin around the flex portion (where it broke) that i only was able to tack it. Does anyone have any ideas how to seal this tube or does anyone have a spare they'd be willing to part with. Thanks for any help you can give me!

When it breaks at the bellows, there's not much you can do with it.
You can probably make one with some copper tubing and fittings, but you'd have to tap the exhaust manifold and upper intake manifold for fittings.
You might ask the dealer techs their opinion of blocking off the EGR passages and eliminating the system entirely if you're in an area where you don't have to comply with OE specs for emissions testing..... I'm not recommending that... just a suggestion for a possibility.
Junkyards should have something.

the dealer dont have them anymore but i bet the aftermarket would.what year is your rig?
oh i was thinking of the valve itself.sorry junk yard.

It's an '89 with a sweet running 3.0 (until the exhaust guides dropped that is!) I was thinking, i should be able to scab a piece of tube of tube with the existing ends instead of fabricating a new one like you suggested right? Do I have and pressure concerns in the egr system that I should worry about? Thanks for the help.

No - no pressure concerns as long as it doesn't leak. If you can find a piece of copper tubing to make a sleeve over the existing tube, that should work.... cut out the bellows and solder the sleeve over the remaining ends. It should be fine as long as the stay braces are securely bolted to the upper plenum for support and vibration damping.

I'd braze it. I'm not sure solder is up to the heat loads.

Well thanks for all the help. I cut out the bellows and slid a piece of steel pipe of a slightly larger diameter over both ends, then bolted it on, tacked it up and then I did braze it. It works like a champ! I have to wonder what the purpose of the bellows was in the first place. Maybe I'll find out soon!
