Getting the Wheeling Fever
It doesn't sound like my fan clutch is releasing when I am driving. I suppose the engine will be cooler, but was wondering if anyone can comment on the amount of horsepower it takes away and possible fan component failure from working overtime. Would anyone reccomend yanking it out and replacing it with an electrical fan? Costs$$$? How much could I save on fuel consumption? Any drawbacks to an electric fan?

Thanks Boys and Girls

How about putting in a new fan clutch? I got a new one from Toyota for about $80, IIRC. I think you would spend at least that much or more for a decent electric fan, thermostatic control, wiring, etc.

I had the same problem on mine. I've been told that the extra stress of the fan constantly running is harmfull for your water pump bearings. I got a replacement fan clutch from autozone or napa for $36 bucks. The radiator removes easily, you need a 12mm crescent wrench to get the old clutch off... or is it 10mm?

Heh, radiator came out first since I was replacing the head & timing components neways.

10 mm and the radiator and shroud can stay. Just remove the upper radiator hose

Figure about $240(Black Magic) for an electric fan that has a built in thermostat, you can do it cheaper buy getting a e-fan from a wrecking yard and wiring in your own thernostat, yet I have seen more problems with them than with teh Black Magic fans. You can also rebuild the fan clutch, by pullling it apart and regreasing it using the goo from the Toyota parts counter. I can't recall its actual name, but the parts counter at the dealership should be able to figure out what you need.

Have you considered a Flex fan? That's what I'm puttin on my truck, and they're cheap, too, even for a good one. No moving (sort of) parts, and alot quieter than stock. I haven't looked into actually buying one yet (first things first), so if anyone knows where to get one, let me (us) know-Thanks.

Well, duh, LC Engineering has a Flex Fan kit for $68, but that's a little pricy. The fan alone should be about $25, and then you just need the spacer. Maybe the convenience is worth it. As JB says, "Give me convenience, or give me death".

have you ever heard a flex fan? they are just as loud as a stock fan clutch being on all the time. and it still robs some of the percious power we have in these trucks. oem or electric. these are the most efficient because they are not on all the time!

Come to think of it, I have never heard one. But I recall reading about them somewhere- I guess it was BS-.
