1990 Montero - Class III hitch? #737813 07/16/06 08:14 PM

Has anyone had success finding/placing a Class III hitch on a Montero (specifically 1990). I want to load my motorcyle (370lbs wet) onto a 2" reciever mounted carrier such as this.

Is this too much for this vehicle (V6 - 5spd)?

Has anyone put a "universal" class III hitch on the montero?

Thanks

I don't think you will find a universal class III, it's over the limit of the truck.

Your looking at 450 Lbs by the time you add everything up. Class III is rated at 600 lbs tongue weight. If your truck is in good shape you can get away with it. Do not fully load the truck ( people and gear ) and the cycle <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/shame.gif" alt="" />

I think you will have to go custom to get a class III installed with some extra reinforcement welding in.

Let me go try to fing the maker tag on mine. It's frame mounted with a diagonal brace up to the frame crossmember hitch plate by the recovery loop. Very nice piece of goods...

Is there a difference between the 1992 and 1990? I found this but am unsure if it would work.

Nope, no diff. GenI and GenII hitches are the same. There are a few class IIIs available for the Montero. Here's the DrawTite (second one down) .

Here's the one I finally decided to get, Hidden Hitch 90324, since I will only be pulling a tent trailer, and I still have my pintle hitch for the really heavy stuff, if I ever need it. The price diff was also huge. Up here I paid $160 for the Hidden Hitch, and the frame mounted class III was over $300! If I could have chosen, I would've gotten the Curt Manuf classII, that NWTroop listed above. Its a little nicer than my HH, but I couldn't get it up here.
