i think that alot of the gear strength comes down to brand and install. tntoy is right, if you are going to beat the living crap outta your truck (ie, climbing and letting it hop up and down on the rock), i would go with something like 4:56s and get lower transfer case gears, and serious axle upgrades, no matter what brand or who sets them up. on the other hand,, if you don't plan on that kinda of driving regularly, good quality, well set up 5:71s should work on the trail as well as for towing. just my .02
