Getting the Wheeling Fever
Just wondering what those of you that have gone through transmission problems, noticed prior to it going "out". Seems like mine could be in "double-T-troubs". Over the weekend I logged about 600 interstate miles on it and the next morning when pushing the clutch in the truck didn't move. Typically it rolls back a bit. Noticing this as strange, I put it in reverse and slowly let out on the clutch. It popped (moderately loud) then went into reverse. No problems since (2 days) with this though. My truck is a 91 trooper, swapped 3.4, new clutch, bearing and plate (6 months ago), new clutch master and slave cylinder (3 weeks ago). Anyone had this problem? Thank ya.

Did you have good clutch pressure? First thought it the pedal was light, is that you need to bleed your clutch system.

clutch pressure was ok. When we replaced to master and slave cylinders a couple weeks back, we bled the system really well I thought. In my personal opinion the clutch pressure could be better though. The pedal doesn't engage as high as it used to. But it shifts into gear just fine. This problem has happened before (month ago-similar situation), after a long drive and then sitting overnight.

I think these manual transmissions are pretty tough, and you have to abuse them to weaken them. My other advice is to keep clutch operation and transmission problems seperate. Sometimes one gets diagnosed as the other. Sounds like you just have some clutch problems.

Have you checked both clutch fluid and trans fluid?

The clutch fluid is ok and I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that I'm not sure where to check the tranny fluid. Some couple of years ago I think I checked the tranny fluid and the rear end gear oil by pulling a bolt out and sticking my little finger in there. I ended up draining and refilling with fresh gear oil in the rear end but I can't remember about the tranny fluid for soem reason. I think I need to check the fluid level for sure. Thanks for that. Wish I just had a dipstick like the auto tranny. How often do you guys change the tranny fluid? Mine could very well need replacing.

two things pop out to me

1.) the symptoms cry out that they are possibly heat related (long drive, cool down, etc.)

which leads me to
2.) no mention of a pilot bearing in your parts list for your clutch job.
which leads me to wondering if that could be binding (although you'd think you'd hear that if that was the problem).

thirdly, would be wondering if the throwout bearing is adjusted incorrectly, i.e. is it engaged (slightly) all the time spinning, heating up and 'freezing' on cool-down?

but you'd thnk you'd hear that, too.

(just some thoughts as i take a break from trying figure out my own (auto) trans problem). <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />

good luck

I have been hearing the throw out bearing making noise actually. And have questioned the way the guys installed the pilot bearing. He said that he had to freeze the pilot bearing before installing it for whatever reason. I only assumed the new clutch kit came with a new throwout bearing and he used it.

Hmm my Pilot Bearing used to make noise..It was because my tranys input shaft was worn and there was slop. I very carefully welded a bead on and emery clothed it down. Works great. It has been..25k miles? No problems! The noise went away too!
