Ok, so my 4runner can barely get out of its own way even on the best of days. But turn on the AC and its dam near wont GO!! I know itÆs robbing me of precious power but after driving it a day with the AC on and then turning the AC off I feel like I am driving a sports car. Is this typical for how much of a pig my car is?
is it the same for the 2nd gen trucks

Having the A/C on makes a pretty big difference for me. But given a choice, I'll take the loss in power over sweating anyday.
If Mad Max had a 4runner...

Especially since you're moving to Phx.
The 22r series heve never been known as power engines, the nickname squirrel is fitting. They're are known for long life. There are things you an do (cheaply) to get a few more "nuts" to your 22re.

is it the same for the 2nd gen trucks You are driving a fat, underpowered runner in the first place, then you turn on a compressor that has at least five pistons, more then likely seven pistons it is going to rob power. Other things to take into account, is it an automatic, is it lifted, do you have wider, taller tires, did you do a diff gear change to compensate for the bigger tires. All of the above will cut power in a heaver runner you are lucky it even moves!!!!

22RE and 2nd gen 2runner just isn't a good match. It's too heavy...maybe 1000lb more than the 1st gen. the 3.0 V6 is better.

Believe me I know what it's like driving a gutless rig. Mine drives like an underpowered fully loaded dumptruck and it's so frustrating, I'm trying to decide whether or not I even want to keep it or buy something else.
However, the AC only robs a few horsepower from the engine. I can feel a very slight difference with the AC on, but if you have a major different, you may have other issues related to the AC, like some plumbing in the vacuum system.

I dont have a runner, just xtended cab, but I think you might be having power issues that are just problems. First check that TPS to make sure it is telling your engine to run right, that thing seems to screw up everything if it is off. Also check your vacuum hoses, replace them, they are cheap, and I noticed a big difference in how smooth my engine ran. Check your 02 sensor, those can force the engine to run rich if they are off. Check you PCV grommet. If your TPS if bad, get a new one, tune it up and it will run like a new engine.
