Been having a problem with the smell of tranny oil in the Runner for a while. Did have leaking rear axle seals and a leaking seal on the front of the transfer case, both of which have been repaired. No longer leaving spots on the street when parked. Still have the smell of diff oil. Don't like that and want to fix it. Ideas??

The gear boxes breath through the shifter or some have a separate breather on top. Get in the right wind condition and gear oil fumes get sucked up into the cab, happens on my '85. I find Redline synthetic gear oil smells a whole lot less than dinosaur squeezins. But for a total fix, run breather lines from each gear box up to the firewall. That will be what I am going to do:

Might be an answer. Didn't used to be like this however. Seems to have got much worse in the past year or so.
Wondered if I have overfilled the tranny or something such that it is causing a problem. Has to be either something that I have done to it or something that is wearing etc. It has definitely changed over time.

I've noticed it in my truck too, but it's very sporatic. Seems to happen under conditions where the truck is run really hard and the tranny oil is hot. I know we've been having hot weather here lately.....

Could be a clogged breather, I think the V6 trannys have them, if that plugs fumes go up around the shifter boots. Or the boots could have pulled loose from the floor (I have a leak there on mine).

Mine started doing this when dual cases were installed. Extra heat with 2 cases and a less than perfect boot seal are probably the main culprits for mine.

Check the output shaft on the t-case. Mine was leaking thru the splines. Wasn't enough to drip on the garage floor, but was enough that you could smell it if you drove it for a while on the highway. It was being thrown onto the exhaust which I think made it more noticeable.

Good idea to check the transfer case output. We did have a leak there and just replaced the seal. However, I recall having read that one should put some RTV somewhere on there and I know I did not do that. Anyone remember the post on this?

Any idea where to look for the breather Roger? I had a clogged breather on the back diff and that was what caused the rear axle seals to leak.

On my 88 v6 5 speed, its just forward of the shifter.

Here's a pic. I'm pointing to the breather with the pen. Theres also one for the t-case in the same location. The breather should freely move around. If its stuck then it's probably clogged.
