If it is like most lockers, it takes barely a sneeze at 90psi to activate them, and there is no "continuous flow" involved. ARB make a nice little mini locker compressor (not enough volume to pump tires etc), but would do the job well. Good thing is it is 5" x 6" x 3" in size and can run on a small battery if needed (only draws 5 amp when running).

I wouldn't go changing the earth to make room for powering the locker.

5 Gal tank will fill 1 or 2 tires from 15-30 psi, which means you still end up waiting for you compressor to do the remaining tires. Nowhere near enough capacity to run any air tools on its own, unless you are using an A/C compressor to fill it, even then you don't really need a tank anyway...(or as your mate does, a VERY high capacity compressor - >150 lpm/5 cu ft/min)

even if i were to have to wait to fill the tires, it still gives me the option of airing down if i find the need and being able to fill up on the trail if need be. I know my compressor wouldnt cut it for air tools. its a viar 550. fills my 8 gallon tank in 2 min or something like that. i was going to get a second one, but might just get a real big one for the car.

my friends oasis fills his 13 gallon set up in about 45 seconds to 180psi. its a york compressor, a/c style with a warn winch motor spinning it.

You would be better off with a second compressor rather than only one large one, as if the big one breaks you end up with nothing. Ditto for a second battery and controller.

Other thing to consider is all the extra weight that you are carrying around. This would possibly contribute towards breakages in its own right. There is a saying in Aviation Engineering which I like, "Add lightness and simplicate". Taking guidance from that, only take what you can realistically justify (safety and purpose), rather than what you might need "sometime", or what looks "cool". Take two compressors (redundancy on important items) but do you really need a tank at an extra 20-30 lb just to run air tools (20 lb), when a decent set of spanners will do (10 lb)?

I've done a bit of traveling in the outback of Australia and this would be one of the most important things to realize: pack light and travel light. It all adds up to less wear and tear on the mechanicals of your vehicle and on your tires...and they are two things that when totally stuffed WILL leave you stranded in the middle of nowhere (regardless of how many "whiz-bang" gadgets you have in the vehicle).

I use my A/C once a year just to see if it still works. Its mostly just taking up room never being used,I like the windows down,It would be more handy with an air line

what about using the smog pump for the air? Not sure on the specs, but it probably wouldnt be hard to put a T in there somewhere and have all the air you need. some guys even use smog pumps for superchargers... hmmm....

CO2 tank works the best. You can fill about 20 35" tires from 5 psi to 35 psi on a tank the size of a scuba tank. That's 4 air ups before having to refil your CO2 tank. The locker would only take a little shot and the tank has enough grunt to run an air tool for over 5 minutes at full tilt.

You can get your tank filled up any where you can get your paint ball CO2 tank filled, but it is better to ask where they get their tank filled and get it from their supplier.

I like the York A/C compressor, but space is limited under the hood as it is.

How much volume (CFM) and PSI is required for the cylinder on this modification. I was thinking along the lines of a 12v compressor out of a Caddie or Buick for their air suspension would be more than enough to actuate the air cylinder. Am I missing something???
I am looking for a complete rearend with posi. Please contact me with $ and location if you have one for sale. evlu@comcast.net
Thanks,

For the lockers (ARB, TJM, etc) you need about 90 psi (80-105 psi). In terms of volume not much, quite literally milliliters (has been said that a decent sized airline will hold enough volume for several actuations). In the TJM in the diagrams I gave above, the actuating cylinders are 1.5" long x 1/2" diameter, with a throw of about 1". Any sized tank is almost a pointless overkill.

CKSA 12 compressor:

Small, light, and designed for the job. Simply not worth stuffing around with anything else. 4.8" x 6.4" x 3.5", 5lb, 6.5amp flat out.

I most likely would end up putting my viar 550 into the kia. most likely no tank, as i know it wont power air tools. it is 100% duty cycle, so it would be fine running to fill tires, dont know how long it would take, but it would do the job. reason i would go with this one, is that i already have it. and am looking at doing the oasis for my air ride in my car, so it fills super fast. (air ride is too fun to ply with!!!) my car is set up rite now, that worst case scenario, i go to the gas station and use the air hose to fill my tank and dont hit the switches.
