Hey Mike, I did some reading and found that it is not a interference motor.
Did your timing belt go?? was that the problem???

here is a quote I've found from Jerry Lemond
Quote
BUT FIRST TAKE MY WORD FOR IT YOU HAVE A SOHC ENG AND IT IS A NON INTERFERENCE ENG, AND YES THE BELT CAN JUMP IF THE TENSIONER IS LIKE YOU DESCRIBED , THE ONLY THING THAT GETS HURT IS YOUR PRIDE

I'm pretty sure its the same on the dohc.

and here are a few links...

timing didnt jump.there is a timing chain under the valve cover for exhaust timing, the guide is plastic.....mine is shrapnel!!which in turn put the exhaust out of time.its only gonna hurt a little! <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/shiner.gif" alt="" />
I was there earlier tonight....everything else looks pretty clean under the valve covers.

From Gates, who maakes timing belts, they have both a PDF Manual and an "enter your vehicle" lookup guide. The agree with Jerry.

Gates Timing Belt Page

1991-97 2.6L 4-Cyl. *

Replacement Interval 60,000

1993-97 3.2L V6 (SOHC) #
Belt part: T221 ___ TCK part: TCK221**
Replacement interval: 60,000

* - Interference engine. Other interference engine applications may exist which are not indicated here. See page 27 for interference engine cautions.
# - Uses a timing belt driven water pump.
** - Does not include camshaft tensioner hydraulic assembly.

THE EARLY DOHC IS ALLSO A NON INTERFERENCE ENG , INSTALL A NEW CHAIN TENSIONER AND YOU SHOULD BE GOOD TO GO, CLEAN ALL THE JUNK OUT OF THE HEAD , THAT IS AN OIL PRESSURE FED TENSIONER WITH A SPRING ALLSO, IF YOU ARE CAREFULL YOU CAN SNAKE THE OLD ONE OUT FROM UNDER THE CHAIN AND GET A NEW TENSIONER IN WITH OUT TAKING THE CAMS OUT , IT IS TIGHT AND TRICKEY BUT YOU CAN DO IT ,JUST TAKE YOUR TIME , WORD OF CAUTION BE VERY CAREFULL TIGHTING THE VLV CVR BOLTS BACK DOWN, THE CORNERS ARE VERY EASY TO SNAP OFF, JERRY

Got to jump in on this thread. What if it is an interference motor and the timing belt or tensioner went out while running? Can it be saved? Is it as simple as replacing the belt and tensioner or is there more to it? My boy's just went out on his and, well, you know it is when you're 18 with no wheels.

If it's an interference motor and the belt goes, you're probably looking at at least a bent valve or two. Worst case scenario will get you broken valves and piston or cylinder wall damage, but it's not a given. Minimum of a head job though, I'd say.

Keep it on topic. Dodge Neons are not Isuzus.
