Getting the Wheeling Fever

Hi all, I'v been a member of the Jeep Forum for a short time now but I am looking at a '92 4Runner, it's time to pass the Jeep on to my son and I'm getting to old for no A/C & shifting gears. I'v heard that the early '90s V6s had some issues. Anything obvious I should look for? Thanks - DB in Fresno, CA <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/patriot.gif" alt="" />

A portion of the 3.0 V6's had head gasket issues. You can take the VIN to a Toyota dealership to see if its HG was replaced in the recall campaign. As far as a general inspection, rust can vary dramatically. Make sure there is no excessive rust underneath, especially in those important places such as the frame. And I know this sounds obvious, but drive the truck on the highway at high speeds. This will show any high speed vibration, noises, rumbling, etc. As long as your HG is good, the V6 can last a long time. Not the best gas mileage, but it will last. If the truck has a solid frame and a strong motor, start talking numbers!! Post some pics too.

Have you considered a 3rd generation? I have a 1998 SR5 that is up for sale. Let me know if you are interested. Mechanically perfect with one dent in the hatch that needs repair or discount on sale price.

I think I'll pass on this one. The prospective seller said that he had the trans rebuilt because it wasn't shifting properly, after the rebuild($2900)shifting is still the same. Now he is told that it is the trans ECU. On top of that it has 200,000 mi. I'm looking to spend about $4000, I think I'll keep looking.
