When you put the back half of the factory top onto your truck, how do the two halves connect to each other? Good question. I lined the inside edge of the front half with some 2" wide aluminum flat bar. 1" rivited to the front fiberglass, and 1" protruding out of it. This outer 1" aluminum edge is where the snaps for the top are screwed into. This edge (with the 1/2 snaps removed) acts as a seal per say, laying under and in between the 2 fiberglass top halves. Basically, fills in the 1/8" gap created by the thickness of the cut-off wheel. 2 regular top bolts each side, and down the road I go. I do have a little play there though. The halves kinda slapping around a bit with bumps, but that's it. My fingers hurt, I just need to take a couple pics huh? Wow, ...Thanks Corey, means alot

Well, I am goign to get another tailgate now and do this mod. You actually have me thinking of cutting up my top now!!!!! LOL That is the best solution I have seen for running a partial top on the back.

That is the best solution I have seen for running a partial top on the back. Yep, I figured I was just carrying around dead weight. Now, the tailgate weighs about the same, but got rid of the toobox. But, I still got the tools and newly found piece and quiet. It's a win-win kind of thing.

Staceman - also re: the top (sorry to pull thsi o/t), when you have that 1/2 top on there, are you usin ga different rollbar? From (what little I can tell in) the pics, it looks like your rollbar bends back into towards the cabin at the top. fitting the angling contour of your top. But normally it sticks out the other way (as in yer 1st pic w/ Can-back. Am I just confused in the angles or did you do something to that too?
BTW to get back o/t, for the box, I wonder if you were to use aluminum instead of wood if it would help alot w/ the weight. Then to limit the (potential) noise and add some strength, line/glue it w/ Dynamat style rubber or something, then the velcro padding on top of that.

Well, if I had a sheet metal brake, I would have definately used sheetmetal, or aluminum diamond plate for the main box. Again, this was more of an experiment, and I have more wood tools than metal. The base of the box is masonite, and by itself really doesn't weigh much at all. I am planning on doing the top part with the lid in aluminum diamond plate though. That stuff's price really goes up depending on thickness. I will probably just cover the entire top with some thin stuff and leave it at that.
My rollbar,... I cut the 2 side support bars at the top of the main hoop, then just flipped it around. I am going to bend the 2 side bars to go up at its existing angle, then bend those so they run parallel to the top of the bed, then re-weld them to the main hoop.

OK, OK, OK,.... Here's the thread on the top. I did all the prep work, a convertible top shop did the vinyl portion. I even told them where to put the snaps. The rear window is the old-school convertible top clear thick plastic. CLICK HERE FOR TOP THREAD

Not a bad idea. Personally, I'd have stopped at the plywood door/ box assembly. I love how neatly everything is laid out, but if you need to carry something else, or find a couple of missing tools, it's re-organizing time.
Since mine is bobbed and doesn't have a 'gate, I stuff the little nooks and crannies in the rear fenders and next to the rear seats (no interior panels, either) full of $10 canvas tool bags from Sears or home depot. One for pliers, impact gun, etc... another for all the sockets and ratchets, etc. They didn't rattle or fall out during any of my rollovers, and can be packed to the gills and then wadded up and stuffed into a tight space, etc. As you mentioned, there is NO worse setup for the trail than a metal toolbox. Loud, heavy, and bulky.
Nice job. Excellent idea.
