for about 4 or 5 months, the 22RE in my '91 truck has had a really high cold idle, around 2500RPMs. it started happening around the time i did a clutch job, i started the truck up and it would hardly idle once it was warm, felt like it was somewhere around 400RPMs. i was able to fix that by turning the adjusting screw but then the engine races when it's cold.

since then, i've rebuild the engine and its still there, so definitely not a vacuum leak. i'm also only getting 20mpg in city and on the highway in an otherwise bone stock(other than EB's RV head and cam) truck. is this a sign that the TPS is bad or out of adjustment?

Check your aux.air valve on the underside of the throttle body. But if the problem began while doing clutch work....ah hell I dont know. Time for lunch anyways....

Seriously. You cranked up the idle air screw to solve a low warm idle problem...which also would increase your cold idle speed...since its still enriching the system while engine is cold. Solve the original low warm idle problem that you covered with the band aid adjustment and betchya things go back to normal.

Gotta nickel?

hey just lettin u knowi had 2 problems that i just fixed. i also had a high cold idle rough warm idle one of them problems i had was a "throttle opener" because i used to have a auto trans it uses a vaccuum operated throttle opener which always contradiced my warm idle because it would open the throttle slightly, the other problem was the tps. i got a new one and adjusted it on the truck with allen keys i didn't use a feeler gauge i just slowly turn the tps untill i heard a difference in rpm just as it goes to a low rpm i tightend it down and my turck runs MINT!!!!! i still have a very slight slight chop at idle but my power is back and everything feels very smooth and powerfull....just to let you know...good luck man
