Need a Spot
On my 94 4runner (4X4), I can move the outer CV joint by holding on to the CV Boot. I can move the CV joint about 1/8 of an inch in any direction expect in and out. When I am driving on anyhting but flat, smooth pavement, i can hear the Cv Joint rattle. Is the CV Joint bad? Could it be caused by loose or damaged bearings?

Thanks,
Christopher

Are the boots torn?

How does it compare to the other side?

The CV axle floats in there a little, as it goes straight thru the hub.

What caused you to crawl under there?

The boot is fine. It moves much more than the other side. I climbed under to find the source of a rattle I've been hearing for the last week, and I believe it may be caused be the loose CV Joint.

If this is also on the passenger side, get a hold of the differential flange and see if it's still rigid or not. I had a carrier bearing fail once; that was fun. The flange shouldn't move.

If ya wind up changing it, try and take the axle to the parts store with you and save on the core charge up front-- was $90 about 2 years ago.

Sounds to me like the spindle bushings are worn.
see

For instructions on how to replace these bushings with bearings. For a short term fix you can put some grease between the CV shaft and spindle bushings.

For the past week? Do you make a habit of driving with your hubs locked all the time, or is it rattling while going over bumps?
