I think the condition of the two engines and drivetrains would be the deciding factor for me. I'd do a Bona Fide compression and leakdown test on both engines and after considering mileage oil pressure and vehicle histories, decide which one to use. I would even consider using both engines and building a stroker (putting the 4.2 crank and rods in the 4.0 block). I also recommend the site CSP posted for more info. I agree i would also like to say another option is to do a head conversion(putting the 4.0 head and fuel inj on the 4.2).Which i did would depend on which block was better(less wear,not cracked and so on)
