If teh FJ80 is a bit pricey for you right now, how about the FJ60, it isn't as luxurious as the 80, but it is still has a larger engine than your '89. It also doesn't take more than a helper spring to fit 33's under it. I would think for your excursions the larger vehicle would make your trips more pleasant. I have seen them here in CA for as low as $2500, I have also seen early 90's FJ80's for around $5k as well.
