I am getting ready to do this modification to my T100 and would like to know if there is anything different I should do vs. what the Tacoma guys have to do. I noticed there is quite a bit of room on the front of the filter housing and wanted to know, Should I only go with the 4.25" hole or should I do two smaller holes? and Do I need to cut out part of the radiator support to allow for better flow to the front of the air filter? I also noticed that some Tacoma owners are removing the elbow where the air box goes into the front fender area, Has anyone tried this? I will be using my stock filter for awhile until it needs to be replaced at which point I will plan on going with an Amsoil or other brand of filter.

Thanks in advance for your input!

Kevin

I know you're looking for others with T-100 experience with the mod, but thought I would toss this in anyway from my 2000 4Runner V-6 experience.

On mine, removing the elbow, got the same performance improvement as the deckplate mod.

I ran with the elbow removed for several years before I decided to do the deckplate mod..

The deckplate mod ends up causing more intake noise than just the elbow removed .. some people may like this, but after a while it got tiresome.. I ended up putting in this line of sight baffle which I could adjust the distance from the opening to mute the sound a bit.., but not reduce the air flow.. the round disc is an old 6" rubber sanding pad used with portable drills, that I had laying around..

And of course with the deck plate mod, it's easy to put the cap on, if running in water... and allows quick easy comparison runs with the cap on and cap off.. Believe me, it's worth doing the mod (or elbow removal) for the difference in power levels.

Hope this is of some help (and relevance to your 3.4L T100)

My current T100 is my 3rd T100 I've had in the last several years. It's all stock for now, but will be building slowing in the next few years.

My first T100 was purchased about 4-5 year ago. It was an '95 and I had quite a few mods on it. One of them was to remove the elbow and drill a 4" hole in the front of the filter housing. I had plan on buying the cap for it, but never got around to it and just left it open the whole time. Unless you're doing some deep water crossing, I've never had any problems in the 4 years I've owned the truck.

As for performance gain, I really want to believe it was more, but other than the sound, I could not tell the difference. I've always log all my MPG everytime I fill the tank, and it was no difference. And yes, I've even unplug the fuse and battery for some time to supposedly reset the computer on the air flow w/o much success.

If you search around, or if others chime in on their T100, I'm sure you'll have others that may have claim a difference. For me, it was not worth it other than the louder sounds on the intake.

If you have some time, I would say to just try it and see for yourself. The nice thing about this mod is that it's free, or very cheap.

I agree with this. My experinces are the same. Comparing the two (4Runner-T100, 3.4)I think the mod works on 4Runners because they have a smaller air box than we do, and the increased airflow is already there with the T100's.
