Gen I - 3rd row of seats? #743552 08/09/06 01:48 PM

I keep getting conflicting information about a folding 3rd row of seats (in the vein of the old LR defender fold down seats). This is a Phillipine Montero but am wondering if it was an option in the states? I have seen that a few scrapyards list 90/91s with jump seats.

I put the back seat from a SWB into my 89 LWB... with lap-style seatbelts.

The seats face forwards and I only had to drill 2 holes which I used a bolt and nut on. The other bolt holes were there from the original tie-down mounting bolts in the back... that includes bolt holes for the seat-belt mounting bolts.

The jump-seats in that picture look like they're aftermarket.

Sideways facing jump seats are not DOT legal in the USA. Thats why you will never find them OEM.

That's interesting. I wasn't aware of that. I have plans to do something that I didn't want to let out until I completed it. Now I may have to revisit my ideas...

Really? Is that why the LR Discovery changed their jump seats to forward facing when they went to their Gen II? I thought (or at least assumed) the Ford Ranger & Chevy Colorado eliminated their sideways facing jump seats due to adding the partial rear doors and thus losing real estate to mount them to.

Years ago I looked at a non USA SWB Montero that had sideways facing jump seats behind the second seat. Had a NA diesel in it, too. Still kick myself for not buying it!

I forget the exact year they changed the regs. I should have clearified...we had a 67 Country Squire station wagon with sideways fold up jump seats in the back. You just don't survive crashes very well when the sholder seat belt takes out your neck.
