Guys: I dropped the tranny on my '95 trooper to fix a whirring sound when the clutch pedal was depressed. I'm going to replace clutch, pressure plate, bearings, cat converter, muffler, o2 sensor, etc while everything is pulled. One thing thaty surprised me, was that there was some greasy deposits inside the bellhousing,. The clutch and pressure plate were quite clane, byut the the throwout bearing was really gummed up. Also, the plate behind the fywheel has a bit of oil on it . Any advice?

Could be anything leaking back there, oil pan gasket, rear main seal, transmission front bearing retainer, etc... My opinion is that it's not that big of a deal unless the friction surfaces were actually oily. At 5000 rpms, and high heat not much is going to stay on the friction surfaces unless the leak is really really severe. I had a bad distributor seal oil leak about 1qt+ a month, the inside of the bell was caked in thick brown sludge, but same situation, friction surfaces were dry. The oil wasn't even causing any strange issues with clutch operation I was in there because the pilot bushing had grenaded. It was much worse than what you're showing here. It actually looks normal to me for an area that doesn't get washed as its sealed up.

I'll venture its the rear main oil seal. You ought to replace that too while you're in there and going for the gusto, if only to fix a leak.

yeah, a couple...

1.) so, you got a new camera, eh? <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/nana.gif" alt="" /> nice pix, actually.

2.) you are way too picky <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/nana.gif" alt="" /> .

but seriously, folks. . .

i assume of course that the throwout bearing is losing its lube or the lube is getting a little old and fried, and that's the typical sound. which will get fixed when you replace it. i couldn't see any problem with the t/o bearing from the pix.

Also, the plate behind the fywheel has a bit of oil on it .

frankly, i don't *see* any real oil problem from your pix, and it doesn't look like you cleaned anything up first, unless you wiped off the bearing retainer plate (?)

what i see looks like maybe grease or such slung around abit by the starter gear. and maybe a little weep at the bottom of the bearing retainer plate at the lower left looking at it from you pix, which *might* be from that bolt, which maybe could have benefited from some thread sealer. i don't know if i'd start correcting every little minor thing, only to open up a can of worms...

it's also possible some of the (little) fluid in the housing is from seaping through the mating surfaces from above.

frankly, all the parts pictured look pretty good, and except for all the labor, would normally be good to go, imho.

one thing not pictured is the flywheel. how's its surface? my guess is, from looking at the pressure plate, that it is fine, but if in doubt consider getting it checked at a machine shop and possibly resurfaced; but probably just a little emory cloth to clean it up and break any glaze and you'll be good to go.

also, did you mention the pilot bearing?

all my comments are pretty generic...and probably nothing you don't already know. maybe someone else is going to chime in with a year-model-specific direction.

good luck.

I think the rear main is ok, but Jerry L talked me into replacing. I'd hate to have to get back in there.

I dunno fellas, to me it looks more like the valve covers have been 'weeping' for a while, and the oil worked it's way down there... follow the gravity backward and look at the back of the heads, and the outside top of the bell housing.

Couldn't a whirring like that also be from the front bearing ?

Sorry, I guess I pasted at same time as BCtrooper. They parts looked pretty good to me. I believe one of the bearings, most likely the throwout, was making the noise. It was very gummed up in dust, oil, grease, etc. The other stuff looked OK. I guess I was suprised my the oil behind the flywheel. I think its coming from valve covers, but will likely replace rear main, since the tranny is out.

AS far as the camera goes <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/nana.gif" alt="" />, its actually several years old <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/nana.gif" alt="" />. I was just taking some pics for future reference.

ANayway, thanks for the comments. I just didn;t want to forget to handle something while its all pulled apart.

Mark, those photos really have me wondering how my stuff would look torn apart like that <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/scared.gif" alt="" />

It sounds like you've got the right attitude - replacing as many things as possible while you're there...
Good luck <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />

For safety, hopefully you were at least wearing boots while you were doing the actual wrenching, right?

Smiley, I normally wrench in birks, cutoff, and a tiedye. In all honesty, my head was closer than toes to any possible carnage. Eye and ear protection was more important than steel toes.

You got it apart, do the rear main seal just for preventitive maintenance, whether you think its leaking or not. Thats what I'd do anyway.
