Should I try to rebuild the original Carter carb or buy a new weber (any suggestions on weber model?). I have heard bad things about the Carter and don't won't to waste the time and expense on a futile rebuild. I would appreciate any suggestions. Engine - inline 6 (258 Cu) Thanks.

If the carter has been in use and just needs an adjustment or cleaning... Then by all means FIX IT. The difference between a new carter and a new webber would not be noticeable. Your Jeep will run it's best with a little upkeep and never need a carb change. Big JIm

I've heard more bad things about Webers than Carters. If your determine to get rid of the Carter, consider a Motorcraft 2100. The right sized one is hard to beat, especially when you take cost into consideration. Do a little web research. There's tons of info online about the swap if you're interested.

Ok Harvey if you are going to change carbs MAKE sure you ONLY get the 1.08! If you get a higher number than that you will be waaaay over carbed! You will also want one with an electric choke.. they can be hard to find. Your best and easiest is to keep the carb you already have. Big JIm

You can get a remanufactured one from a discount parts store for around $120-$150 I believe, you'd have to pay a core charge. an early 70's Ford 302 or 289 (Mustang, Mavrick, etc.) should be the right size. There are folks that sell conversion kits on ebay. I bought my 2100 (not a kit) on ebay and got it delivered for $30. They are very easy to rebuild as carbs go and a rebuild kit for the older models costs about $12. If you don't buy a kit you'll have to do a little fab work on the linkage. Nothing major or particularly difficult.
