It's a VERY good question and one that I've asked here a few times. Seems that they do typically last well into the 200K range.

I, like you, don't want to end stranded somewhere and even with a spare...which I do carry...it would be one heck of a PITA to change in the back country.

The only reason I haven't put a new one is that they're pretty spendy at Toyota...and I hate to go to all that work to replace it only to have to made some minor mistake or whatever to cause the new pump to fail or if I got a bad new pump.

I have well over 210K miles on my truck and I think I will eventually just replace the pump, but not right now. Maybe for next summer.

But as long as we're on the subject, I too, would like to hear more stories from others about how long they typically last and what were the signs of impending failure?
