Need a Spot
Hi Guys....
Really like the BB...lotsa good info....
Anyways....recently bought a 1995 T100 2WD Ext Cab DX...131K...one owner (an engineer who doted on it)....
All maintenance has been done to specs...oil changes every 3K...timing belt...water pump...etc......
Main question is:
I drive mostly highway miles, so I slowed to 60 MPH as I have more time than money (i.e. no hurry), and my gas mileage has dropped to 19-20 MPG.
At 65-70 MPH, my MPG seemed higher at 21-23.
Is this possible????
Is my T100 more efficient at 65-70 MPH????

Any opinions are appreciated..

me too. It seems like 70mph is the sweet spot. I get my best milage when I'm really pushing it sometimes, makes no sense at all. I've even been leaving the O/D off. When I get back to nursing it, milage turns to crap.

Best I ever got was 19+ at 60-70 mph range. This includes camper shell and 31" tires.

Not disputing you, simply noting that my results are different. At 65mph I get 19mpg. At 70mph I get 17mpg.
There's hardly any deviation from those values, which I find interesting. I've never run across a vehicle that was so rock steady on its gas mileage as this truck is.

i get just over 19 myself. mix of driving but very consistant. i think it's a toyota thing. i had a 85 pick-up 4x4 got right at 20, didn't make a difeerence what i did, loaded-empty, fast-slow,big tires-stock tires, 20 wa what you could count on.

When I installed the massive TJM bull bar I lost mpg over 70 mph. That thing is just NOT aerodynamic!.

I can say I get the same mpg with an empty bed or 1200 lbs of gear, also run 32 psi front and 37 rear.

As stated earlier, this a 2WD model and I'm running street/highway tires. At 70 MPH, I'm turning around 2450 RPM with a 3.77 gear.
The only thing different I have done was add the surf racks that span the tonneau cover. Surely they would not cause that much wind resistance.
I'll keep checking that MPG...just trying to get all I can at today's gas prices.

This is my first Toyota and just love the quality they built into this T100.....

Thanks for all the info, guys....

At 131K you may be seeing some mpg loss due to drift on the O2 sensor.
Not cost effective to get back 1 mpg.

I used to "putz around" at the speed limit for gas mileage purposes using cruise control.

Then I had a week where the cruise control didn't work, so I did things manually, and found myself in the 70 mph range.

I too noticed better mileage at the higher speed w/o cruise control. Couple things I attributed it to: drafting, and cruise control being too aggressive when going up hill.

I have been pondering the sweet spot for a while too.
I know my mileage plummets over 80mph, and is ok around 60, but set the cruise at 75 I will be getting 19, (with cap and 4wd) I think that the engine has a real easy time turning 3000rpm, and that wind resistance still is not so bad that it is eating up all of the power. I believe wind resistance goes up logarithmically (by the square of the speed) so at 20 mph wind resistance is 400, 40 mph it is 1600 and at70 it is 4900 and at 80 it is 6400 (I havent a clue about the unit) so a small increase in speed could be a massive increase in drag.....
