Few transmission/t-case questions #745976 08/20/06 08:00 AM

I have searched, but can't come to a definite conclusion. I know what should be in this truck:W56. But I just replaced my shifter seat, and when I removed the shifter, I didn't have to press down and twist on a metal collar like everyone else talks about. Instead, as you can see in the pics, it had a 4 bolt cover. Anyone know what trans this is? It is in my 88 pickup 22re. New shifter seat sure did make a difference though.

Also, as you can see, the trans lower shift boot was badly ripped. Should I be worried about water in my trans now? I did splash through LOTS of puddles a few weeks ago. I was going to change the fluid in it sometime soon anyway, but now I am kinda worried. Does anyone know where I can find one of these boots?

And is it normal for the top of the t-case lever to be that rusty? It is all surface, but still. Once again, should I be worried that water got in?

Thanks for any help. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />

I believe you have a W56 transmission. The other alternative would be a G series, G52 or 54. They are the same length as the W series, but the casing on the outside is different. A 4wd 22RE truck would not come from the factory with a G series however.

Check this link for the different transmissions and pictures of each. You will be able to determine rather quickly from looking at the outer case on your tranny to tell.

I believe you have this tranny - http://www.marlincrawler.com/htm/transmission/w_56-b.htm

Other options to check - http://www.marlincrawler.com/htm/transmission/3a.htm

W56A or B, see Marlin's tranny ID page, I have one in my '85, but I actually converted it to a push-twist style:

Where can I buy a new tranny shifter boot? Marlin doesn't have that one. Will I have to go dealer?

Junkyard, or Cal Mini Trucks - look them up on google. They have a ton of toyota parts and will ship.
