I ended up doing what I did to my '85 Pickup to fix. Using a push-button ignition switch on the dash, used between battery+ and solinoid(sp) wire connection. This one is in parallel, so if it does fail with the key, I can push the button and be on my merry way. 85 4Runner - With NEW Marlin 4.7 Gears!! It's a whole new beast!
