When I did mine, I went ahead and purchased a pacesetter header, I know I got it for less than $200. I then had the entire restrictive system replaced. I think it cost me less than $300 + the cost of the header for a new setup including cat and O2 sensors.

2000 Chevy Tahoe nothing special. 1990 Isuzu Amigo, 3" lift, 31x10.5x15 BFG All Terrain (Street), 33x12.5x15 (offroad), Pacesetter header, some ATM rash. More mods to come......

Some aftermarket mufflers can make your truck sound really cool! Be careful though, because some will sound like <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/barf.gif" alt="" />

Personally, I prefer quiet exhaust. That's where OEM comes in as the clear winner. And it's size that makes it happen, plain and simple.

My ideal exhaust system would use an electronic noise cancelling system to make it perfectly silent, very lightweight and extremely small.

For the most part thats true. BUT they do have "free'er" flowing aftermarket exhausts that are just as quiet under all condtions as the stock. Size is a factor, but baffles and restrictions inside also apply.

This won't give you the hp gains of a free-flow exhaust, but I think its a good trade-off in clearance (size), weight, and performance.
