Getting the Wheeling Fever

I have a 85 cj7 with the 258 and carter carb. Here is the deal it will not pass emissions. They state it is running to rich. Here is what I have done complete tuneup. Plugs, wires, timing and carb adjustment. It is now running like a champ but will still not pass emissions. Any suggestions would be helpful.
Thanks in advance <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/lol.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/cheers.gif" alt="" />

Have you checked the operation of the feedback system?

That engine (I think) has a feed back carburetor that is adjusted by an emissions computer. It takes inputs like the O2 sensor and vacuum switches and uses them to determine what mixture to run the carburetor at. You can quick test it by pulling the air cleaner and box off and looking down the throat of the carb. Near the back (towards firewall) you will see 2 metering pins. When you turn on the key to run they should go all the way forward, all the way back then come to a rest somewhere near the middle in a start position. If they do not move, the stepper motor may be bad. If they work, start the jeep drive it around to operating temp then remove the air cleaner again. Hold the jeep at about 2000 RPM and monitor the metering pins. They should be moving back and forth regularly and not be tending towards an extreme.

what sunder said you may just need a new 02 sensor. if that dont work (and i may get flamed for this) pour 2 bottles of rubbing alcohol in a 1/4 tank and try again. It may be magic, it may be BS, but I never failed 10 years of colorado emissions! Josh
80 CJ-7. It runs

I told a buddy of mine about that for his Toyota that wouldn't pass with an illegal header and the EGR blocked off. It failed worse. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/lol.gif" alt="" /> He hasn't spoken to me since. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/baby.gif" alt="" />
I had made it clear to him that i would have failed him just for having that header on it. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/rodent.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/nana.gif" alt="" />

Sunder,
Yes checked all that it all is working fine. But, and this is new to me. It came down to a catalytic (sp) converter that was not working. It was not clogged at least not yet it just wasn't doing its job. Replaced it and now the jeep passes with flying colors but doesn't run any better or worse. Go figure <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/lol.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/lol.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/lol.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/lol.gif" alt="" />
