Getting the Wheeling Fever
Hello everyone here at the board my name is Damon. I have always wanted a Trooper deisel. Ask my wife everytime I see an early model i look for the deisel badges. But lets get to the point at hand. I have read on here of the isuzu deisel swap for the later model isuzu deisel engine but what I was wondering was is it possible to put a GM 6.2 or 6.5 deisel into a trooper?

The GM V8 is probably too much engine for the Trooper. It's big and heavy, which would make it tough to fit and you might need some serious front suspension work.

Read this thread, I am enthused about this conversion and intend to follow the progress - it sounds like something you may be interested in.

I am the one doing the 4.3L Diesel swap into a 90 Trooper. I did a lot of research before I attempted this and it is a very doable swap. I also have a 5.7L Diesel and it would not fit, so the 6.2/6.5L Diesel is a no-go.
There are some advantages with the 4.3L, 170ftlbs of torque in stock form is the big plus. Second is that it bolts up to the stock Isuzu trans, if it was a 2.8L equiped truck to begin with. So, no trans swap or adapters needed.
The size of this engine is large, but it still fits in the engine bay. A V8 would not fit.
I am a little worried about the power it will have. I read that people with the 4J**-TC engine have clutch issues due to the "High" power of those engines. Those only have about 120ftlbs of torque and 85hp. Mine has 170ftlbs of torque and it has it low in the RPM range due to being a non-turbo engine. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/evil.gif" alt="" /> I may need to look for a high pressure pressure plate and heavy duty clutch if this one goes out too soon.
I am having Digital camera problems at the moment so I have no pictures, but I will get some soon.
The most difficult part of this swap is finding a GM FWD car with the 4.3L diesel in it. I got lucky and found one at a local used car dealer and traded an old Geo Metro for it. They do come on E-bay and other sites sometimes.
Good luck and if you have any questions, feel free to ask me.

Roll Me Over
The GM performance 3.4s (gas) run about 195 ft. lbs., torque and most of us are running the stock 2.8 clutch (if we have manuals) so I wouldn't worry too much about the clutch.

A simple improvement is to go to the clutch out of the 3.1 Rodeos. It is a little larger, but fits just fine.

Those sound like numbers for the C223-T diesel. The 4JB1-TC I've got is rated at about 110 HP and 175 lb./ft. torque (actually, those numbers are for the 4JB1-T non-intercooled engine, so mine may make a bit more). A fair amount more is possible with boost and fuel adjustments. I have read reports about the clutches slipping due to dust or similar - we shall see.

We've got to take up a collection to get this fellow a camera! Very interesting...

As an aside, is there a reason the 4.3 V6 diesel from a RWD car would not work for this conversion?

The reason a 4.3L Diesel from a RWD would not work is that those use the standard RWD bellhousing, not the FWD that the Trooper uses. They have an Olds RWD large pattern.
I would love to have a new Digi cam, but money is tight, I have to work with the old one I have.
I will be doing more work on it this Saturday, hope to have lots of good info and pictures for you all.

What is this 2.8L engine? Is it a US sourced engine?
The troopers from japan had a 2.6L petrol engine.

The 2.8l Solomon refers to is a GM-sourced V6 (gasoline). It was used here in the US for many years in cars & light trucks from GM, Jeep and Isuzu. It was an optional engine - we still had the 2.6l 4-cyl gas Isuzu engine, too.
