How do you replace your ATF? Do you just drop the pan, clean the filter and refill?
Is there a way to replace all of the ATF in the system?
What is the manufacturer recommended way of ATF replacment?

What model year you have? My 95 has a drain plug on the bottom of the transmission pan. I have seen posts and asked my mitsubishi dealer and most everyone has said just drain and replace the trans fluid. I have changed it at 30k, 60k,& 90k miles. This last time I used Valvoline MaxLife ATF III, but I think Diamond IV ATF is out now and you can use it. I think I saw a TSB that said older transmissions can benefit from the newer better ATF. I think you need 7 quarts. It keeps it shifting smoothly

If you just pull the plug, you do not get all of the fluid out. There is still some left in the torque converter, and elsewere.
I just want to tell you both good luck, and we're all counting on you.

Mine's a GEN II M/T, but I'm asking the question for an '03 Hyundai Starex (same powertrain).
Does the manufacturer recommended procedure call for draining all the fluid out? How is it done?
All the Pep-boys type shops here just want to drop the pan, and add new ATF (around 3L).

everywhere that I have read, you need to hook up the tranny cooler to a machine at a shop that draws all the old fluid out and at the same time replaces it with the new fluid. This way(I have been told) draws all the fluid out of the torque converter and tranny. At least with me it did.
I put in the required spec amount that it said in the manual. I am due to do it again here soon too.

Problem over here is even the dealer does not have the machine to fully flush the system. So it has become 'industry' standard to just drain the pan.
I've found a third party shop that has the equipment. I'm just researching if they are a good shop. The ATF, I'll probably get OEM Hyundai stuff.

Forgot to clear that up. The GEN II is M/T. The Starex (also using a 4d56 engine) is A/T.

It hooks into a drill pump and we just pump right from the jug after draining the tranny from the bung plug in the bottom. Its a little slower then the specialty set up, but it works. The pump has push around 15 psi. Almost forgot, put a bucket under the tranny cooler to collect the fluid you're pumping out.

How much for that lil setup you did Macka. Sounds pretty cool. I'm interested in checkin out your set up you have for your race truck. It would save you money in the long run compared to taking it to a shop to do the tranny flush with the machine.
Its true, you only get some out if you take the plug out, the rest is in the lines and the tranny. You'll have to do the flush, which at most places costs a lil over a hundred bucks. Or you can go the slower route and drain what is in the tranny pan, fill'er up, drive around, drain it again and fill'er up again, and repeat if desired. It might not be 100% clean, but it will be more like 75% new- 25% old. But it also requires you to spend more money on tranny fluid. But in most cases, buying more tranny fluid costs less than taking it to a shop to do the flush. Whatever you prefer....
