On my 3.0 '91 I had to try three different starters before the place I went to in Huntington Beach finally just rebuit mine. That darn starter problem was the first time a Monty has ever standed me - in the middle of some sand dunes deep in Mexico.

After whacking the solinoid a few times, I finally pulled the starter and turned it by hand, reinstalled it and it finally fired up. That caused us to head home right then, and I didn't shut the motor off the entire way - a little scarying filling it up with the motor running, but we made it. That starter just gave up the ghost all at once and I never did get it turn over the motor again.

Not sure why the other rebuilts didn't work for me, but the dealer cost for one was waaay out of the question. I do recall some issue with the starters being Montero-specific (not a long enough throw to engage the fly wheel). Good luck, and definitley go with the starters with a warranty of some sort.

Good luck,

Jim
